Here’s your sign to contact your physician to get a referral for Pelvic Floor Therapy (PFT). I’m getting busier these days thanks to more women standing up and asking for what they need, and in this case, so many of us need to have extra support through PFT.

I know you have a ton of items on your to-do list, and you may even be so busy that you haven’t even had the chance to craft a list (Whew, I have been there…). I am here to remind you that you cannot pour from an empty cup. Take the time to care for yourself through PFT and be refilled in new, lasting ways.

Healthcare providers do wonderful things for patients, but remember: they are human so some things can get forgotten, especially when said thing is not a habit, like PFT referrals. This is where it pays for you to be your own advocate and speak up. You don’t have to be rude or demanding; it can be as simple as messaging your doctor in your healthcare portal and saying something like this:
“Hi Doctor, I’ve been seeing a lot of things online about Pelvic Floor Therapy, and I relate to many of the issues. Can you please write me a referral to be evaluated by a pelvic floor therapist?”

(Bonus points if you’re in my area, and you let them know you prefer to see Dr. Nikki Berner of The Fem Method Pelvic Health.)
Sign that says "there is no sense in living with a solvable problem"
If that script doesn’t work for you and you get brushed aside, contact me. Let’s see what we can do to get you evaluated. We may have some hurdles to handle but, sister, you are worth the effort and we’ll jump through those hoops together. I’ve been a Physical Therapist for 11 years and I am keenly aware of how deeply healing targeted motion is. It’s time to target the healing of mothers.

There is no badge of honor for pain. There is no sense in living with a solvable problem. These things may be common, but they are not normal:

      • urinary leaking
      • bowel conditions like chronic constipation
      • pain with sex
      • painful periods some cramping pain can be normal but there are limits
      • prolapse

It is best for the patient when healthcare is multidisciplinary. That idea wasn’t always around, and thankfully, the silos are breaking down. If you have mentioned the above things to your doctor, to your friends, or even silently in your prayers, then you need to take action for yourself. Reaching out to your physician is the first step in most cases.

I love working with the women I get to treat as patients, and I love working with their established healthcare team so that we’re all on the same page regarding the patient’s health. The free flow of information between providers regarding medicines, history, and lifestyle is invaluable. When we tap into that, we are able to create the ultimate payoff for Y-O-U, your body, and your life.

      Yours in Health,

      NB
